Introduction: Sword - The Gentleman of Weapons

Category & Way of Use

Chinese Kungfu is actually the most complicated martial arts around the world, as well as the weapons, even under the same category. As one of the main weapons in Chinese martial arts, swords can be generally categorized into the following types, based on different usages:

1. Common Sword

As the name suggests, a common sword is the most common category in the world of swords, and one-handed. It is very easy to practice or even get mature for almost any martial arts player.

2. Big Sword (or Long Sword)

A big sword is actually the longer version of a common sword, and usually two-handed. It is not hard to play a big sword, but repeating practices on the feeling of distance and body moving are the cores. It is said that many ancient Chinese generals preferred big swords because they were both suitable for one-on-one or group fighting in the battle.

3. Double Swords

Double swords are a pair of two swords usually with the same length, and the player should use them together. The practice of double swords is not a easy job since it requires a high level of coordination between the player’s two hands, and other parts of body as wells. However, if the player gets professional with double swords, he/she can combine the attack and defense together, or even confuse the opponent.

4. Asymmetric Swords

Asymmetric swords are actually a kind of double swords, but with different length. The way of practice is very hard, and the forms of attack and defense are various and quirky.
