‘Dun’ means grand; ‘Huang’ means glorious. The ancients used these words to describe the magnificent prosperity of ancient Dunhuang. Today, Dunhuang Ancient City, located 16 kilometers west of downtown Dunhuang, brings that legendary splendor back to life.
Often hailed as “a museum of ancient architectural art in Northwest China,” the city is a meticulously reconstructed fortress modeled after Tang and Song dynasty styles. Originally built in 1987 as a film set for the Sino-Japanese epic Dunhuang, it spans 150,000 sqm in total area, with 15,000 sqm of built structures. Infused with rich Western Regions (Xiyu) aesthetics, the city vividly recreates the majestic presence of Dunhuang, a key Silk Road stronghold during the Tang and Song eras. Within its walls lie five distinct streets representing historic cities: Dunhuang, Gaochang, Ganzhou, Bianliang, and Xingqing, each crafted in its own regional architectural style. Towering gatehouses, Buddhist temples, silk shops, taverns, pawnshops, and courier inns stand in stunning variety, each detail echoing the glory of a bygone age.
